Maximising the lifespan of your stairlift

By Bethany Ward on 17th January 2023

Stairlifts should have an average lifespan of 7-10 years. However, if they are well maintained, they could last a lot longer, so you should have your lift regularly serviced by a professional.

Having a stairlift is similar to owning a car; if you maintain it regularly and look after it, then it will last a long time.

What factors can affect the lifespan of your stairlift?

  1. The quality of your product
  2. The weight of the user
  3. How do you treat your stairlift
  4. Having your stairlift serviced

1. The quality of your product

It’s true when people say you get what you pay for, and the same applies to stairlifts, so it’s important that you purchase a good quality product that will last you for years to come.

You can buy new and second-hand models; however, if you’re looking at purchasing a second-hand stairlift, we advise you to check its age. Second-hand models that have had their parts checked and worn parts replaced with new ones will last longer than ones that haven’t, so it’s always worth checking if they have been factory-reconditioned properly.

It’s also important to consider that the technology in the stairlift industry is constantly evolving, so as newer models come to the market, manufacturers will discontinue their older models. There’s no way of knowing how long a stairlift model will be on sale before replacing it with a newer model; some models have been on the market for over 20 years with periodic updates, and some models have been replaced after five years.

Usually, in the UK, manufacturers commit to providing and railing spare parts for their discontinued models for 5-7 years. After this time, you may be reliant on independent stairlift companies having stocks of spare parts if you need any.

2. The weight of the user

All stairlifts have a weight limit or, in technical stairlift language, a “safe working load.” There is a sticker placed on the carriage of the lift that indicates the weight limit; however, if you haven’t bought a stairlift yet, the weight limit should be on the brochure. Even though products are tested to more than the suggested safe working load, it’s not advisable for you to go over the weight limit; otherwise, you’re going to experience some problems with your stairlift.

3.How do you treat your stairlift?

As we mentioned before, if you don’t look after your product, it will not look after you. You should always treat your stairlift carefully, use it correctly and follow the manufacturer’s user manual. Keep your stairlift clean and in good condition. Just a quick wipeover of the track and chair once a week will be fine to prevent a build-up of dust or pet hair. The last thing you need is any elements ending up in your machine and clogging up the insides of your carriage. Don’t grease or WD40 the rack on the rail, as this will have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve, damaging your stairlift. You should always remember to get your lift regularly serviced as well.

4. Having your stairlift serviced

When it comes to having your stairlift serviced, how often should you be doing this? Your lift should normally be serviced annually; however, if it is under heavy usage, then it’s a good idea to get it serviced every six months. If you don’t get your lift serviced, then it will not last as long.

During a service, a stairlift engineer will:

  • Clean your lift down – the rail, chair, and carriage
  • Lubricate parts that are necessary depending on the model you have
  • Check all the safety circuits are working correctly
  • Ensure all the bolts are tightened, as they may become loose over time
  • Check all working parts for any signs of damage and excessive wear and tear
  • Make sure your batteries are checked to see if they are holding the right charge
