Access Dealer Spotlight: EMS Lifts Ltd

By Adam Wakes on 18th March 2026

For more than three decades, EMS Lifts Ltd has been helping people maintain their independence at home. Based in Baldock, Hertfordshire, the family-led mobility specialist has grown from a small engineering partnership into one of the UK’s most respected independent stairlift providers.

As a long-standing Access dealer, EMS Lifts Ltd represents the values that define strong dealer relationships. These include technical expertise, outstanding customer care and a commitment to delivering the right mobility solution for every home.

Built on Engineering Foundations

EMS began its story in 1988 and was originally founded as Electro Mechanical Services. From the outset, the company was built on strong engineering principles and a dedication to exceptional aftercare.

In 1995, Michael Armstrong joined the partnership, helping expand the business beyond servicing into the supply and installation of stairlifts and home mobility solutions. This marked a pivotal moment for the company and laid the foundation for EMS to become a trusted independent specialist in the home mobility market.

Further growth followed in 2006 when Jonathan Muir joined the business. The company was incorporated as EMS Lifts Ltd the following year and moved into its purpose-built headquarters in Baldock. The site remains the company’s home today.

The headquarters also houses one of the UK’s largest stairlift and mobility showrooms, allowing customers to see and experience different solutions first-hand before making an important decision about their mobility.

A Family-Led Business

Throughout its history, EMS Lifts Ltd has remained a family-led business, and that culture continues to shape the company today.

The next generation has stepped into leadership roles, with Matt Armstrong and Alex Muir now serving as Directors after working their way up through the organisation. Long-serving team members have also progressed within the business, including engineers who have moved into senior management roles.

In 2020, Greg Muir joined the company as part of its succession planning. With experience in founding and leading award-winning companies, he brought a strong focus on customer service and technology.

Recent investments in digital systems now support engineers in the field, streamline job management, and improve customer response times.

Today, EMS Lifts Ltd provides complete mobility solutions, including stairlifts, home lifts and accessibility products, supported by comprehensive aftercare across Hertfordshire and surrounding counties.

Serving Customers Across the Region

EMS Lifts Ltd supports customers across the East of England, London, and parts of the East Midlands and South East, including Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk.

With locally based engineers, the team can provide prompt home surveys, professional installations and responsive servicing when customers need it most.

Having operated in the mobility sector for more than 35 years, EMS Lifts Ltd has built a reputation for combining the expertise of an established specialist with the responsiveness of a trusted local provider.

Independence That Puts Customers First

One of the defining characteristics of EMS Lifts Ltd is its independence.

Rather than being tied to a single manufacturer, the company can recommend solutions based purely on what best suits the customer and their home.

“Every staircase is different, and every customer’s needs are different. Because we offer a wide range of mobility products, we can recommend the right solution rather than being limited to one option.”

This philosophy extends to the company’s Baldock showroom, where customers can try a range of stairlifts and mobility products in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Visitors can experience working stairlift installations, explore different models and speak directly with experienced specialists who can guide them through the options available.

A Long-Standing Partnership with Access

EMS Lifts Ltd has been working with Access for over 20 years, building a relationship grounded in trust and collaboration.

“The support we receive from Access throughout the year is something we really value. Whether it is training, technical guidance or helping support our customers, Access is always available to lend a helping hand.”

Access products play an important role in EMS’s offering, helping them deliver reliable and versatile mobility solutions to customers across the region.

The Flow X curved stairlift offers the versatility and flexibility needed to fit even the narrowest or most challenging staircases, helping more customers regain their independence at home.

Helping Customers Stay in the Homes They Love

One of the most powerful aspects of stairlift installations is the difference they make to everyday life.

EMS Lifts Ltd recently worked with Access to support a customer named Valerie, who needed a safe and reliable way to continue living in the home she loved while caring for her husband, who was living with Parkinson’s disease.

Working closely with EMS Lifts Ltd, Valerie found the right solution with a Flow X curved stairlift, allowing her and her husband to remain in their home comfortably and safely.

The story highlights the importance of expert advice, thoughtful installation and choosing the right mobility solution for the home.

A Showroom That Sets the Standard

The EMS Lifts Ltd showroom in Baldock has become a key part of the customer experience.

According to Gary Crofts, UK Sales Manager at Access, it stands out as one of the best in the industry.

“For the past 14 years, it has been a genuine pleasure to work hand in glove with EMS. Over that time, it has been incredibly rewarding to see both EMS and ourselves at Access grow and evolve together in true partnership.

The EMS showroom is second to none and stands as a real testament to their vision and commitment to excellence. It provides end users and occupational therapists with an outstanding environment in which to experience the facilities first-hand, ensuring the very best journey from assessment through to installation.”

Making a Real Difference

While the business has grown significantly over the years, the core motivation behind EMS Lifts Ltd remains unchanged. Helping people stay independent in their own homes.

“We see customers who have been struggling with the stairs regain their independence overnight. We see families feel relief knowing their loved ones are safe in their own homes. That transformation is incredibly powerful.”

Providing the right mobility solution is about far more than installing equipment. It is about restoring confidence, safety and quality of life.

This philosophy continues to guide EMS Lifts Ltd more than 35 years after the company first began.
