Understanding Stairlift Stop and Charge Positions

By Bethany Ward on 28th April 2023

Your safety is paramount when using a stairlift. By understanding the correct usage, including getting on and off safely, securing the seatbelt, and operating the controls properly, you can minimise the risk of accidents or injuries.

Knowing the difference between the stairlift stop position and the charge position is important, as this empowers users with mobility challenges to maintain independence and navigate between different levels of their homes or buildings with confidence and convenience.

What Is the Stairlift Charge Position?

The park position, also sometimes called the stairlift charging point, is where the stairlift battery recharges. Most home stairlifts operate on rechargeable batteries, so it’s vital that the lift is parked correctly to ensure it’s always ready for use.

Typically, the charge points are located at the top and bottom of the staircase. Additional charge positions can be installed further along the track, which is useful if you want to park the stairlift mid-way, for example, on a landing. These points can be accessed using the stairlift’s remote control. Placing the lift in the charge position ensures that the batteries are fully charged and ready to use when needed.

What Is the Stairlift Stop Position?

The stop position where the stairlift comes to a halt. These positions are usually located at the top and bottom of the staircase, but extra stops can be added, like a mid-landing.

The stop position makes sure that the stairlift does not travel beyond the end of the track and at each point, the lift automatically stops, so the user to safely get on or off safely.

Stop Position vs Charge Position

Even though they can be found in the same place, the stop position and charge position have different purposes:

Stop position: where the stairlift halts movement

Charge position: where the stairlift battery recharges

Make sure to always wait until the lift has come to a full stop before getting off and make sure it is parked in a charge position when not being used.
